Viking operators are built to be serviced. Boards, limits, batteries and drive components are all replaceable, and a fault is rarely a reason to replace the unit.
About this operator
Viking builds heavy-duty DC swing and slide gate operators for residential estates and commercial sites — the T-21, R-6 and G-5 swing units and the K-2 slide among them.
These are substantial units, frequently fitted to large or heavy gates. That matters for diagnosis: on a heavy gate, wear in the gate hardware itself — rollers, hinges, posts — puts load on the operator and produces faults that look electrical. We check the gate before we check the board.
Common faults we see
Gate stops in the wrong place
Limit drift, or wear in the gate hardware that has moved the gate relative to the limits that were set for it.
Slow or laboured travel
Usually a binding gate, or a battery that can no longer deliver under load. These are DC operators, so there is no motor capacitor to blame.
Control board failure
Often after a surge. Replaceable without a new operator.
Lost limits after a power failure
Older K-2 slide operators without Viking’s position sensor can lose their limits after a total power failure. Re-learning them fixes it; nothing needs replacing.
High-cycle wear on commercial sites
Chains, bearings and rollers are consumables on a gate running hundreds of cycles a day. Planned replacement costs far less than the failure it prevents.
Safety device faults
Photo-eyes and edges stop the gate closing. Usually alignment rather than failure.

On heavy gates this is the most informative single test there is. A dragging gate produces electrical-looking symptoms.
Inspect rollers, hinges and posts
Wear here moves the gate relative to its limits and will destroy a new operator too.

A battery can read fine at rest and sag the moment the motor draws from it.

Questions we get asked
My Viking gate stops in the wrong place. Is the board faulty?
Often not. Worn rollers or hinges drop the gate on its track, which moves every position in its travel — so the limits that were set are no longer where the gate physically sits. We check the gate hardware before touching the board.
Are Viking operators hydraulic?
No current Viking operator is. They are DC units driving the gate through a chain and gearbox or a screw drive, so the faults we look for are batteries, boards, limits and drive wear rather than seals and fluid.
Do you service commercial Viking installations?
Yes, including high-cycle entrances where downtime stops a business. We also set up planned servicing on those, because parts there wear on cycle count rather than calendar age.
Is a heavy gate hard on the operator?
It is if the gate hardware is worn. An operator fighting a dragging gate fails early, which is why we check the gate first rather than fitting a new unit to the same problem.
