The problem
The gate had stopped moving entirely. Power was reaching the unit and the motor could be heard humming when a command was given, but nothing moved.
How we diagnosed it
- Confirmed supply voltage at the board — normal.
- Moved the gate by hand with the operator released — free through full travel, ruling out a mechanical bind.
- Tested the run capacitor under load. It was reading well below its rated value, which is exactly the condition that produces a motor that hums and will not break away from standstill.
What we did
- Replaced the capacitor with a correctly rated part and ran the gate through several full cycles to confirm the fix held warm.

Normal operation restored the same visit, with one of the least expensive parts on the gate.
What you should take from this
A humming motor is the most commonly misdiagnosed symptom in gate repair. It points at the capacitor far more often than the motor — and a capacitor costs a tiny fraction of the operator that frequently gets quoted for it. If you are told a humming gate needs a new operator, get a second opinion.
